As much as unit tests ensure the quality of the software being developed by making sure that bugs don't exist (well at least in what is being properly tested!), having a continuous integration approach in the development lifecycle ensures the consistency of the structure when multiple developers work on the same project and also ensures non-regression by quickly indicating generated problems.
It is therefore possible to automate compilations and tests execution, version deployments, update a website... according to any criteria, such as a time-based criteria which will trigger a build daily or nightly.
